About the event

The Heritage Museum of Asian Art is proud and honored to host a visiting group from the Jangchub Choeling Nunnery in India. Please join us in welcoming the Jangchub Jamtse Tour group on their first visit to the United States! You may remember our spotlight event with the venerable Lama Losang Samten last November, where a sand mandala was created and destroyed over four days.

We invite you to the Heritage Museum of Asian Art to take part in this evening of learning, performances, and more! Attendees will listen in and hear the Jangchub Choeling nuns lyrically recite mantras. Experience their practice of Chöd (literally “cutting through”), a ritual performance that embodies the transformation of obstacles and is an expedient means for understanding the teachings of the Buddha. Finally, learn from them through a “Day in the Life” of a Jangchub Choeling nun and Q&A session.

About the Jangchub Choeling Nunnery:

Fulfilling the Tibetan heritage-preserving vision of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the Jangchub Choeling Nunnery was founded in 1987 in South India. Since then, the Nunnery has been a site of philosophical education and training for women of all ages who wish to pursue the study of Buddhist scriptures. At Jangchub Choeling, over 200 students from ages 9 to 76 study philosophy, grammar, poetry, and science, with some studying to attain the Geshema degree, equivalent to a PhD in Tibetan Buddhism and requiring rigorous education, testing, and debate over multiple decades.
