STITCHING STORIES
Mobile Making Workshop w/ HerArt Foundation's Sona Kim
May 4, 2025
Workshop
Chicago, IL - On May 4th, the Heritage Museum of Asian Art hosted a mobile-making workshop for our Stitching Stories series! The workshop was led by Sona Kim, founder of the HerArt foundation. Participants were given two mediums that they were able to choose from-- either a mobile or a frame-- and were able to explore all that they could with the beautiful Korean and western fabrics provided.
With the intricacy of mobile making, Sona Kim also brought another activity where participants were able to create a piece with the fabrics with photo frames, giving those who chose to do so an open canvas to explore. The frames themselves were inspired after Kim's own art, which she showed to everyone in order to get some inspiration. The option to make mobiles was still available, with only a few daring attendees who gave it their all to make pieces that spoke to them. At the end, a select few decided to show off their pieces which they were able to name, such as "All Things Glitter" done by Needles and Threads Quilters Guild member, Zakiya Williams!
This very open-ended workshop had many participants working together in order to make their vison come to life, which led to a great experience! No prior art skills were required, making the event accessible and entertaining for everyone. The workshop encouraged attendees to explore to the limits of their creativity through storytelling and cross-cultural exchange, providing a great experience for everyone who attended!
This workshop was part of the Stitching Stories project, where we look to bridge the Black and Asian communities together through the art of textile works, supported by Healing Illinois. Healing Illinois is funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services in partnership with The Field Foundation of Illinois.
