STITCHING STORIES
Mother's Day Fabric Card Workshop with Sona Kim

May 11, 2025
Textile Workshop

Chicago, IL - On May 11th, the Heritage Museum of Asian Art hosted another incredible workshop for our Stitching Stories series! The workshop was led by Sona Kim, founder of the HerArt foundation. Participants were given different mediums to choose from-- such as large canvases, frames, or the fabric cards-- in order to create a handmade, thoughtful present for their moms on Mother's Day.

We had an array of guests who attended this special workshop-- ranging from a mother and her daughter to a whole family of five! With many guests coming with children, we had participants of all ages working together for the goal of making their moms' days when they were able to give it to them. Sona Kim with her expertise on textiles was able to guide participants throughout the workshop, letting them know the best ways to approach their end goals.

This very open-ended workshop had many participants working together in order to make their visions come to life, which led to a great experience! No prior art skills were required, making the event accessible and entertaining for everyone. The workshop encouraged attendees to explore to the limits of their creativity through storytelling and cross-cultural exchange, providing a great experience for everyone who attended!

This workshop was part of the Stitching Stories project, where we look to bridge the Black and Asian communities together through the art of textile works, supported by Healing Illinois. Healing Illinois is funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services in partnership with The Field Foundation of Illinois.
