Exhibit Introduction

反響 Hankyo:

The Impact of Japanese Performing Arts in Chicago

(Prelude)

April 17 - May 15, 2026

反響(はんきょう / hankyō) describes the moment of echo and response—the instant when sound waves bounce back from walls, mountains, trees, and human bodies, expanding from one into many. It is a form of feedback, both literal and experiential. In performance spaces such as theaters and halls, hankyō names the living exchange between stage and audience—the moment when connection sparks, and energy, interest, and excitement begin to multiply. This feedback resonates, leaving impressions that continue to unfold over time.

This exhibition offers a glimpse into how Japanese performing arts have resonated in Chicago—extensively, and from the inside out. It does not claim to tell the full story, but gestures toward a broader, ongoing narrative. These are stories of artists, culture bearers, musicians, and audiences. At its heart, it is also a love story—a reflection on the enduring love of art and of life.
