About the event
Join us for an introduction to Asia Art Archive (AAA), a non-profit organization based in Hong Kong. This talk explores how AAA transitioned to its new home during COVID-19 and how the pandemic reshaped the organization’s responsibilities to community engagement and collective authorship through projects such as In Our Own Backyard. The presentation will also highlight AAA’s zine collection as a form of community archive, including how the zine code of ethics informs citation practices and acquisitions, alongside the Try Try Zine residency. The session will conclude with a practical introduction to using AAA’s website and online resources, including its overseas hubs, AAA-America and AAA-India.
Asia Art Archive
Asia Art Archive is a catalyst for new ideas that enrich our understanding of the world through the collection, creation, and sharing of knowledge around recent art in Asia. With one of the most valuable growing collections of material on the recent history of art from Asia, freely available from our website and onsite library, AAA builds tools and communities to collectively expand knowledge through research, residency, educational programs, and publications.
About the speaker:

S. Yi Yao Chao (b. 1994, Canada) is the Zine Librarian at Asia Art Archive. They organized the fourth iteration of the Try Try Zine Residency. They recently exhibited and hosted the Shadow Library Manual—a pop-up library and zine workshops made from the residents’ scraps—at the Bangkok Art Book Fair (BKKABF) 2025.
Morning Asia is a program series by the Heritage Museum of Asian Art that introduces artist residency programs across Asia to Chicago audiences. Through artist talks and online presentations by residency organizations, Morning Asia highlights how artists live, work, research, and create within international residency contexts. The series fosters cross-cultural exchange, supports global artistic networks, and lays the groundwork for future artist exchange opportunities between Asia and Chicago.
