About the event
The Heritage Museum of Asian Art invites you to an evening conversation with Kioto Aoki, whose exhibition Circumference of the Sun inaugurates the museum’s pop-up artist series in response to More Things Japanese.
Aoki will share insights into her multidisciplinary practice—bridging photography, sound, and movement—and discuss how her work reflects on light, rhythm, and temporality as a dialogue between cultural memory and artistic form. In this talk, Aoki will also reflect on her Japanese American heritage and her engagement with traditional and contemporary Japanese aesthetics in a global context.
About the Artist
Kioto Aoki is a Japanese American artist, educator, and musician whose work spans photography, film, sound, and performance. Her practice is grounded in the material and conceptual exploration of visual and temporal perception, often shaped by her background in traditional Japanese musical forms. Aoki’s projects have been exhibited and performed at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, The Art Institute of Chicago, Hyde Park Art Center, and Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. She is also a faculty member at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an active taiko drummer with Tsukasa Taiko.
