About the event
Join artist Pamela Martinez for a creative and engaging workshop exploring Orizomegami, a traditional Japanese technique of folded paper dyeing practiced for centuries in Japan and around the world. The word orizomegami combines ori (to fold), zome (to dye), and gami (paper), describing a process in which absorbent paper is carefully folded and dipped into dye to produce striking geometric patterns that emerge when the paper is unfolded.
During this two-hour hands-on class, participants will be introduced to four fundamental folding techniques that form the foundation of many orizomegami designs. Using non-toxic dye solutions, attendees will experiment with color and pattern while learning how simple folds can create complex and beautiful visual effects.
By the end of the workshop, each participant will have a collection of unique patterned papers that can be used for a variety of creative purposes, including gift wrapping, handmade cards, envelope lining, collage, bookbinding, and other art projects. Beyond practical uses, the process itself is relaxing and endlessly satisfying, making it an enjoyable creative practice for artists and beginners alike.
All materials are included.
This event is co-hosted by the Heritage Museum of Asian Art and the Japanese Culture Center.
