About the event

As the Lunar New Year comes,  Heritage Museum of Asian Art is hosting a  traditional calligraphy event to farewell the year of Tiger and welcome the year of Rabbit with our best wishes. It is the tradition for people to post calligraphy characters written on red paper with new year’s wishes on walls, windows, and doors for celebration. We invite you to join us to make your own calligraphy artwork at the museum. Instructions from the local calligraphy artists will be provided.

One of the most popular characters to write for the new year is Fu(福). Fu means happiness. It was considered a result of doing what comes naturally, thereby attaining a state of harmony with the natural world in the view of the great Taoist philosopher Chuang Tzu. While in the pictographs, Fu consisted of a line, mouth, and land because the ancient ruler could ensure his subjects' happiness by guaranteeing sufficient food for each mouth under the heaven. There are also different styles of Fu, such as seal script or xiaozhuan, clerical script or lishu, running script or xingshu, and standard script or kaishu, for you to have a try on that day.

The event ticket is $10 per person purchased online or at the front desk on the event day. All writing materials are provided. The ticket includes a  free Chinese calligraphy book and a brush to take home.

The Heritage Museum of Asian Art's Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. A parking space is available next to the museum, accessed via West 35th Street.  REVP is recommended.
