About the event

Discover the expressive art of Chinese fan painting in this hands-on introductory workshop. Participants will learn fundamental Chinese painting techniques, including how to control ink, water, and mineral-style colors with a brush. Guided step by step, you will practice simple brushstrokes and learn to paint a lotus flower, a traditional symbol of purity, resilience, and summer beauty, on a Chinese fan.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will take home a hand-painted fan of their own. All materials are included. No previous painting experience is required; beginners are warmly welcome.

About the Artist:

Queena Duoduo Chen is an artist born in Hangzhou, China, and currently based in Chicago. Working across watercolor, ceramics, and new media, she is a recent BFA graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Chen began studying Chinese ink painting as a child, learning the classical methods of gongbi 工筆, xieyi 寫意, and mogu 沒骨. She practiced by closely studying masterworks, both still life and landscapes. After coming to the U.S., her practice shifted from reproducing what she saw in masterworks to imagining what masterworks could be. Her work explores personal memory alongside the rituals of everyday life.
