About the event
Join us for a special International Women’s Day gathering as part of our ongoing Stitching Stories series at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art. This casual and welcoming social event invites participants to celebrate identity, memory, and creative expression through clothing and storytelling.
We encourage guests to wear traditional attire — however you define “tradition.” Tradition may mean cultural heritage, family memory, migration stories, personal ritual, subculture, or even garments that hold emotional significance. What you wear is your story.
The event will feature a small lineup of artists who will share their work and speak about the personal and cultural narratives connected to their traditional garments. Their reflections will explore how clothing carries memory, lineage, resistance, transformation, and self-definition. The program will also include an open mic segment, inviting attendees to share their own stories about clothing, inheritance, identity, or belonging.
Light refreshments will be offered to foster a warm and intimate atmosphere for conversation and connection.
This special edition of Stitching Stories is presented in response to Mayumi Lake’s exhibition, Unison: Obsessive Eyes at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art. Inspired by Lake’s exploration of repetition, attention, and intimate acts of making, this gathering honors the labor, care, and layered histories embedded in textiles and garments — and the women who carry and transform those traditions across generations.
