Workshop: Introduction to Needle Lace-making

In this workshop you will follow Artist Qinnan(rivers) Zhu make your own lace ornament using traditional Chinese methods. All materials will be provided. The fee is $15, Members $10.

About the event
In this workshop you will make your own lace ornament using traditional Chinese methods. The instructor will give a presentation of the brief history of Xiaoshan Lace, and give several needle lace-making demos. Participants will practice based on demos to make an ornament during the workshop time.
Session Breakdown(115-120mins):
(1) Introduction, 5 minutes
Introducing the artist Rivers, Museum and workshop assistant.
(2) Part one , 20 minutes:
Give a presentation of the history of Xiaoshan lace.
Question: Who are the people making lace in Xiaoshan? How do they make this? What is the
physical (body) value of a lacemaker?How do we evaluate the damage to the body in the
process of lace-making?The body is the carrier of knowledge and technology of lacemakers
in Xiaoshan, and how & why should we protect, maintain and preserve this knowledge?
(3) Part Two: 10 minutes:
Present the samples of stitches
Talk about the steps of stitches (4 steps sample work showing)
Show different types of stitches (Pics)
Show sample of a bookmark
(4) Break, 10 minutes:
(5) Part three, 65 minutes:
Explanation of required materials
Practice: step-by-step explanation and guidance to make each stitch
Individual tips and questions will be answered by the artist and workshop assistant.
(6) Part four, 10 minutes:
View final works
Discuss what the participants think about the production process and how they feel
physically and mentally during the process.
